Context
By the 1980s there were increasing concerns over police officer safety and as a result neck ties that required knotting were abandoned in favour of clip on ties such as this. Should an officer be in a violent confrontation an assailant was unable to grab the officer's tie and potentially throttle them, instead the clip tie would simply come away in their hands.
This particular tie was issued to a Sussex Police volunteer cadet in 1987 and is exactly the same as would have been issued to police officers at the time.
