"The Police Gazette" was a periodical first produced in 1772 under the title "The Quarterly Review" and subsequently changed to "The Public Hue and Cry". In 1797 it became "The Hue and Cry , and Police Gazette" and was renamed, "Police Gazette ,or Hue and Cry" in 1828. From 1839 it was simply called "The Police Gazette'.
The main purpose of the publication was to publish details of wanted criminals, with requests for information as to their whereabouts and in some cases to offer rewards. It was originally a weekly newspaper with supplements, produced by the Home Office and later in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police, who took over sole responsibility for it in 1883. In more recent times it was published by the National Police Improvement Agency and then the College of Policing. It ceased publication in 2017.
