Context
The use of the Queen's or St.Edward's Crown on this button dates it to 1952-1967. It would been one of 5 buttons on a West Sussex Constabulary open necked tunic. Smaller similar buttons were used on tunic pockets and to fasten epaulettes. Tunics were worn all year around in West Sussex Constabulary and it was only in 1957 that officer's were permitted to just wear shirts in the summer months for the first time (Barrett 2008).
