Description

Negative, sheet film. 4 x 5 b&w. Olympia Light and Power Company built a powerhouse at the lower falls of the Deschutes River in 1904. The building was made of Tenino sandstone and housed 2 Westinghouse generators and 2 Victor turbines. The turbines were fed by a 9-foot diameter steel pipe that brought water from the upper falls, a drop of more than 74 feet. The powerhouse was abandoned in the early 1930s. Today, the foundation of the powerhouse serves as a viewing platform for the lower falls. The concrete pillars shown here supported the pipe/flume. The Olympia brewery appears in the background.
