Description

Photograph. Carlyon Bridge, part of Highway 99, through Tumwater, linking Portland OR and Seattle WA. The bridge was completed in 1938 and has decorative cast-concrete totem poles at each end. The poles were originally plain concrete, but Peter G. Schmidt Sr. later had them painted in bright colors. Typed on back of photo: "Totem at North end of Highway 99 Bridge brewery in background. One inscription at south Bridgehead reads: 'Gateway to the Puget Sound Country and British Columbia.' Another reads: 'Site of the first American pioneer settlement in Washington 1845'. This refers to Tumwater, End of the Oregon Trail."
