Single sheet of paper, folded in half, to create four pages of correspondence. The first page (just right of the unfolded center crease) has an eagle stamp in red, blue, and brown. The eagle has its wings spread, a branch in one talon and is standing on a shield with the American flag design on it. There is a red ribbon wrapped around the eagle. Under the shield it reads "The union, the constitution and the enforcement of laws". The letter is addressed "III Aug 10th /61 III Old and Respected Friend..." and is signed "Direct your letter to Washington 4th Regi Wisconsin vol in care of Colonel HE Pane. Respectfully yours NJ. Breed". Talks about the weather and the scenery, about atrocities of war including use of wounded soldiers, and inquiring about people at home.Collection
