Scope and Content

Blue sheet of paper folded in half to create four pages of correspondence. The first page is addressed "Baton Rouge, Louisiana, March 9th 1864. Distant Cousin". It is signed on the last page, opposite first page, "This is from Melville Johnson to Edgar M. Dick, Direct to Melville Johnson, Co. B. 4th Wis. Cav, New Orleans, Louisiana". They are camped just north of the city of Baton Rouge and are able to go where ever they want within the picket lines. It talks about a lucky man that was nearly killed, but didn't die; a prisoner; happenings in town which include a killing; and ends with what he had for dinner.
