Scope and Content

Newspaper clipping that uses photo BC2010.022.150A-G. The title of the article is "Old Indian of Gravesville, Calumet County, Who Served as a Scout in the Civil War Under Gen. Harrison C. Hobert, Is Dead". It is part obituary and part personal history of Stephen Nickolas ("Steve Nick"). The clipping is glued to a cardboard backing. There is stuff written in pencil around the bottom and up the right side of the clipping but it is hard to make out. Also written in pencil on the back "A Dear good friend to every body that -- him". The clipping was in an envelope, kept with the clipping, that reads "The civil war scout 1861-1865. Sergt. Stephen Wamsley Nicholas, "Steve Nick". A Full blood Niantic Indian of the Narragansett tribe. Co.D. 1st Wisconsin Cavalry. Mustered in-Sept. 1, 1861. Mustered out- July 19, 1865-Army of the Frontier. Wounded and prisoner at Hodges Ferry on the L'Augville River, Ark. Exchanged and joined his Regt which had become merged with the Army of the Cumberland. Reproduction by Baldy Mehner of Fond du Lac from original Print by Schnell of Chilton. Our prints by Loretta Erke 5/29/49".

Notes

The clipping is discolored as well as the cardboard. There are multiple dark spots on the cardboard but unsure if that is just part of the cardboard mixture or not.
