Two page letter written on a single piece of paper with a bird, branch, and nest of eggs design in the top margin of the front page. The letter is addressed "Colby May 1st, Dear aunt" and is signed on the back "From Hattie Johnson". This is the first letter she ever wrote and she talks about her siblings and going to school daily. BC2010.022.595B is the envelope it came in which is addressed "Miss Agnes L. Fowler, Brothertown, Calumet Co, Wis". Written in different handwriting and in pencil at the top is "Hatties first letter". The envelope was ripped down the left edge to retrieve the letter.
