Single sheet of paper folded in half to create four pages of correspondence. There is a large black stamp of "Great Naval Engagement of Fort Wright" at the top of the first page. It depicts a battle with explosions in the background, soldiers in lifeboats in the foreground and a large fort structure with an American flag and two smoke stacks. The letter is addressed 'New Albany Jan 6 /63. Dear Brother" and is signed "from Edgar M. Dick to Asa Dick". The writing is faint and hard to read.
There are two envelopes with this item (BC2010.022.465B and C). BC2010.022.465B is the original envelope that also depicts a battle on the front and reads "The great Battle of the Antietam Valley. Mr. Asa Dick Brothertown Calumet Co, Wis". There is a three sent stamp in the top right corner. Part of the battle scene that is stamped onto the envelope spills over onto the back. It was opened on the left side so has a jagged edge. BC2010.022.465C is another envelope most likely from O.E. Heller and his notes about each letter. Written on the front of this letter is "No., Place New Albany Hospital, Date Jan 6, 1860, From Edgar Dick to Asa Dick just getting well" And in another ink "Orlando to Edgar Coming home 1865, Naval Engagement Fort Wright. Battle of Antietam Valley".Collection
