Two folded sheets of paper create eight pages of correspondence. They are written so that when folded the first page is on top, second inside as you open the folded paper, third opposite second, fourth on back of the third page (opposite of first page unfolded). Same is true with pages five through eight. The letter is addressed "Camp in Mountain Grove Mos. In the Field, March 13, 63. Shall I say Friend, Abba, I dare not." And it is signed "From your friend and well wisher, L. M. Johnson. Write soon to Miss. A. L. Fowler. Address L.M. Johnson, Co. A. 2nd Wis Cav. 1st Brigade 3rd Division, Army of the Frontier, Via Rolla Mo". The letter is a complaint about the war and the conditions for the soldiers. No pay, bad food, poor clothing. The writer believes he, as a soldier, is worse off than the black people they are fighting to free and that the war will not be won on the field but in Congress. He talks about desertion, unsure who did or if he is just thinking about it.Collection
