Scope and Content

Four page correspondence on a single sheet of folded paper. The first page has a large stamp at the top of a battle and "Battles participated in by the Twenty-First Wisconsin" and it lists the battles they were in; there are 7 listed. Underneath this scene is "Head Quarters, Co.E. 21st Reg. Wisconsin Vol. Inf. Camp near Atlanta, Ga, Sept. 16, 1864" and is addressed to "Dear Friend Edgar". The signature on the last page reads "I remain ever your faithful friend, Philip F. Gay. P.S. Direct to Co. E. 21st Wis. Col, 14 Army Corps, via Chattanouga, Tenn." There is a stamp over the scene of battle that can be better seen in the top left corner of the second page. It is of a circle with plants surrounding it and inside of it. BC2010.022.512B is the envelope the letter was sent in. It is orange-yellow in color with a red 3 cent Washington stamp and is addressed to "Edgar A. Dick, Esq, Brothertown, Calumet Co., Wisconsin". The letter was torn out from the right side of the envelope.
