Scope and Content

Single sheet of typed correspondence with no address. It reads "I was present when David Jones Sub Indain [sic] Agent at Green Bay, Wisconsin Territory Brown County, made the annuity payment to the Menominee Tribe of Indians at Powauhakonnah Lake on the 12th day of October, A.D. 1844. The sum of Specie that the said Jones paid was Twenty Six Thousand Dollars, out of which re retained with the consent of the chief, and head man of the nation, Tive [sic] hundred Dollars for Lawyer H.E. Eastman and Forty Dollars for Doctor David Ward, which left $25,460.00. When the pay roll was completed, the chiefs wishing to know how much was a share, he told them that it was Ten Dollars for each share. They numbered 2,504, which would leave the small fraction of $420. The chiefs consulted among themselves and thought the fraction to small and agreed to reduve [sic] the shares to $9.50, which swelled the amount of $420, to $1672, the last fraction being $1,252. Now the whole fraction being Sixteen hundred and Seventy two Dollars. After the said Jones got through paying each heads of family and individuals, he asked me to assist him in dividing the fraction of $1,252. Says he to me, there is the $1,252; I want you to divide it among the chiefs, and Edward Outhwaite his secretary said yes there is $1,252. The said Jones paid $1177 to the chiefs leaving $75, out of the $1,252, which added to first fraction of $420 will make $495. Out of which he gave me five dollars to buy a blanket for an Indian called Old Ribbon. The $490, I do not know how he paid it out. The above statement is true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. Chas. A. Grignon".
