Copy of Treaty between the United States of America and the Stockbridge and Munsee Indians, February 5, 1856. Treaty is printed on blue paper and bound by sewing along the left edge. The treaty is printed. It was contained in a black envelope with a top flap. Nothing is written on this envelope.
On the inside of the cover written in blue ink "Given to O.E. Heller by Mrs. Ross Grignon, Kaukauna, May 23,1937". The first paragraph of the treaty reads "Franklin Pierce, President of the United States of America, To all and singular to whom these presents shall come, greeting: Whereas a treaty was made and concluded at Stockbridge, in the State of Wisconsin, on the fifth day of February, eighteen hundred and fifty-sex, between Francis Huebschmann, commissioner on the part of the United States, and the Stockbridge and Munsee tribes of Indians, assembled in general council, and such of the Munsees as were included in the treaty of September third, eighteen hundred and thirty-nine, but are yet residing in the State of New York, by their duly authorized delegates, William Mohawk and Joshua Willson, which treaty is in the words and figures following, to wit..." This treaty relinquishes the land around Stockbridge, WI and Minnesota and grant them lots south of the Menominee reservation. It also sets up an education fund and a cemetery, among other things including payments for land and improvements.Collection
