They had no running water or electricity. Her mother did a lot of cooking and washing clothes. Their typical Christmas was going to church, coming home for a big dinner, then opening 1 gift and bag of candy. She was always happy with what she got. Hooyahing was something special to her too. Her parents and older brothers and sisters use to go cherry picking. Alice and her younger sister would have to stay with their grandmother in Kaukauna. Her mother use to sew and do crocheting. They had to use wood and oil for heat and cooking. She lived by Chicago Corners and went to school there. Then they moved where Home Stead is and went to school at High View. She went to Green Bay East High and Washington Jr. High for school also. It was kind of hard for her when she went to Green Bay East. When she was in High School she lived with a family that was close to the school. On weekend Alice got to go by her parents. She had to help do chores for the family she lived with. She graduated from high school in 1950. She worked in Menasha with her sister. She got married in 1952 to Harold Ninham. They moved to Milwaukee shortly after. They lived there most of their lives. Her husband worked in construction. They have 12 children, 26 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. There were pow-wows and everyone would go. When the youngest son went into grade school she got a job and worked there for 15 years. She had a part-time job at the school and was there for 5 years. She moved back to Oneida in 1998 and lived in her husband’s mother’s house. She uses the Health Center a lot. She thinks the casino provided a lot of the people with jobs and other services. Her advice to the youth is get as much education as you can.
