Summers, Amanda
Born 07/13/1924
Parents: Milton Summers and Mildred (Elm/Metoxen) Summers.
**Mother was orphaned, but might be a Metoxen. Seems to have been raised with Elm family.
Amanda went to the Oneida Mission School. The family belonged to the Oneida Methodist Church. The church burned down and they then used the hall for church serviced until the new church was built. Her mother wasn’t much of a canner. Mamie Ryan was a sister to Milton Summers. She was a basket maker in that family. Her parents could speak the Oneida language but never taught the kids it. Both of her parents went to boarding schools but she doesn’t know where. At age 16 she worked at Bellin Hospital. She worked in the Madison hospital also. She moved to Milwaukee and got a job there. Then she moved back to Oneida. She also moved to Arizona and lived there for a long time. She moved once again back to Oneida. There are a lot of changes since she left. She belongs to the dodo club. They have their meetings and stuff 2 times a month. The most exciting thing that happened in her life was her trip to Canada and New York. She says she’d like to go back and visit again. Her father use to tell her stories about when he was in the service. He also was in the World War I. Her mother waited until everyone was old enough to be on their own then she went out to work. She cleaned houses for people in Green Bay. They did their shopping in De Pere at Hock’s Grocery. She worked there until 1979 when her father passed away. Right now she’s a foster grandparent. She worked in Baraboo Wisconsin making the powder for guns. She worked there until the war was over then she moved back home.
