She spent time with her grandparents in Milwaukee. She didn’t know what kind of work her grandfather did but her grandmother was a home maker. Her grandmother on her mother’s side told her daughter not to marry any Indian boy because they were all ugly and homely. Her mother was a home maker until Anna’s father got laid off, than she went to work at Sun Rise Cleaning. She worked there for about 1 year in Milwaukee. Her mother never spoke the Oneida language. When Anna was about 7 years old she found out she was Indian. She told her mother about it and her mother said forget about it. She had to quit school in 11th grade because her mother could walk anymore. She still finished school at the age of 18 though. In 1947 or 1948 she enrolled herself and her sisters on the tribal roll. Her husband is now retired. He use to work in a brewery. He’s been retired for about 16 years now. Anna use to go bowling all the time until her knees got bad. She is taking classes to learn how to speak the Oneida language.
Her advice to the youth is don’t neglect school work and study, study, study.Recording Type
