Description

Lewandowski, Catherine "Cat" (Silas) Born 08/13/1930 Parents: Dewy Silas and Gertrude (Jordan) Her grandmother was a midwife. Her mother went to school in Carlisle and her father went to school only up to 4th grade. Catherine’s grandparents spoke the Oneida language only when they didn’t want the kids to know anything. Catherine went to school at a 1 room school until she was 12 years old. Holidays in her family always meant going to Uncle Andrews’s house. She can understand the Oneida language but cannot speak it. She started 8th grade at a school in Milwaukee. She went to an all-girls school. In 12th grade Catherine was quiet. She soon quit because she had to make her own graduation dress but couldn’t afford the materials. Then she began to work at a tobacco company for 1 year then she got married. Her husband worked for 27 years in a car dealership. The changes that have incurred are: electricity, running water, telephone, T.V., and casinos. Her recommendation to the youth is get your education, learn who you are and stay with it.
