Description

Cornelius (Skenandore), Celinda Jane Born 6/6/1915 Parents: Dixon Cornelius & Jane (Haye) Cornelius I have 4 brothers and 7 sisters. My grandmother was Elizabeth (Skenandore) Metoxen. Don’t know anyone on my father side or my grandmother’s side. My mother and father lived in Freedom. I use to help around the house. I walked to Lavield School. I hauled water from a well about ½ mile from the house. It was al lot of work on wash day. I also hauled wood too. We didn’t have electricity. We had Kerosene lamps. We’d bake bread in a wood stove. My father would go and cut down a tree and bring it home on a slide and horses. We had 2 horses, 4 cows and a lot of chickens. I had to get the eggs from the nest. My mother made corn bread and corn soup. Her mother thought her how to make it too. My mother did a lot of sewing, she made quilts and braided rugs, and I helped my mother. At Christmas time I would help my mother and father trim the tree. My parents would make baskets for the children. Then they would go shopping for their presents and bring them home and put them in the baskets. Then we all when to the Methodist Church, went we got home we opened our gifts. I remember going Hoyoning on New Years Day. When I came home from school, my parent told me that they had to move, because the land lord sold the house. Then I went to a Lutheran School. Father Allen was the teacher there. When I quit school I went to work in Chicago. I worked there for about 9 months. Then I had to come back home, because my dad went into the Hospital for a running ear. I was 29 when I got married, we moved to Seymour. We had running water and electricity at our house. I didn’t sing with the Oneida singer, but my sister did. I never had any children. I was married 52 years and I went to the Episcopal Church, that’s where I got married. Advice to the young is to stay in school and get a good education.
