Her father worked for farmers and daily labors. Her mother did house cleaning and even delivered a few babies. Elizabeth doesn’t know where her mother went to school. Elizabeth graduated from Han-drill School. Her father worked in Chicago at the Coal Company for a while. Her dad saved up all his money so he could build a new house, which is on Cooper Road. She got married at the Mormon Church in Oneida. Then she moved to Chicago, Milwaukee, and then Minnesota. She has 5 children and there are lots of grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Both sides of her family like to fish. Elizabeth is very independent. She was sent away to school until the summer of 5th grade. She didn’t know her parents when she got back. Her mother did a lot of canning. If she didn’t have 500 quarts of what she was canning she felt like she was a failure. Back when she was growing up it only cost Elizabeth $0.10 to get into a movie. Her father use to collect some kind of stuff from the woods. It was good for sore throats but tasted horrible. In school she used to play baseball during recess. Her parents didn’t drink, no alcohol was allowed. She worked in a hospital across the street from her nurses’ aid in Minnesota. Her husband worked as a heavy machine operator. They moved to Hayward with their children. She uses the Health Center for medication and it sucks she says. She never saw a Pow-Wow until she was in her 30’s. She was never told that she was Indian. She lived close by and near Chippewa’s. Her advice to the youth is go to school and stay there, get your education.
