His parents had 12 children. He doesn’t know the names of his grandparent’s. They lived in a log cabin on about 5 acres. They bought a house and 10 acres over on Johnson and Tip Road. His father worked on the railroad, cranberry marsh and he worked at the Larson Co., cleaning out the boilers.
His father went to Carlisle until the 4th grad. His parents would speak Oneida language when someone would come over. His mother has a 6th grade education. She never worked out sided of the house until all the children grow up, then she went to work for a canning factory. They didn’t have electricity or running water. All the kids had to help with the work around the house. They had a few pigs and about 2 hundred chickens.
His parents sang at wakes all night. I started school when I was about 6 or7 years old, at the Advance School; I went to that school until 6th grade. Then I went to Elm Hill School. We had to walk about 3 miles to school.
When someone got sick someone had to walk 2 ½ miles to the nearest phone to call a doctor in Seymour. When my parents went shopping they went to DePere and Vandenberg Store. They would go in horse and buggy. They went to Oneida Methodist Church. They had to walk to church. After church they got a ride with their grandfather, he had a horse and wagon. They had Sunday dinner, and then they rode the horse around.
At Christmas time they would go in to the woods and chop down a tree. They would trim the tree on Christmas Eve, we all helped to trim and crayon the tree. They would get clothing and coloring book and crayons and thing for school. They use to go Hoyoning on New Year Day; they get a lot of doughnuts. On Easter they would go to church, come home and have an Easter dinner. Then on 4th of July they would have a family picnic.
I graduated from West DePere High School. After school I went in to the Service for 22 years. When I got out of the Service I went to work in Kansas City at United Air. Then I went to work in Minnesota at 3M Co., and then I got a job at the B.I.A., Post Office, for 22 years with government jobs.
Advices to the young are stay in school and get a good education.Recording Type
