Metoxen, Gary Grant Born 04/13/1939 Parents: Hazel (Smith) Metoxen and Freeman Metoxen Paternal Grandparents: William B. Metoxen and Mary Metoxen Maternal Grandparents: Rose Smith and Joe Smith His grandfather worked in a mill. He spoke the Oneida language. His grandmother never worked out of home. His father had 8 brothers and sisters. In Gary’s family there are 10 children. His father only went to grade school and his mother went all the way through school and graduated. His parents lived off from Ray Road when he was younger. They had no running water or electricity in their home. His family belongs to the Oneida Methodist Church. Their typical Sunday was going to church and back home again. His parents talked about the New York Claim and how there was money coming but no one knew when or how much. He spent a lot of time at his grandparents’ house in the summer time. He went to Elm Hill School and then went to school in Freedom. He graduated in 1959 from Freedom High School. He joined the Navy in 1959 right after he graduated. He was in the Navy for 23 years. He was management in the Navy. While he was in the Navy he got to travel all over the world. He now has 3 children and 3 grandchildren. He got out of the Navy in 1981 and retired. He lives in Oneida and uses the Oneida Health Center for a lot of services that fits his needs. He thinks the Oneida Nation culture has strengthened through the tribe but does need to be more strengthened. He does a lot of community work and he likes to shoot pool for about 3 hours a day. His mom is the most inspirational person in his life. His recommendation to the youth is guidance, spiritual, and education.Recording Type
