Description

Greendeer, George John Born 08/04/1944 in Chicago, Illinois Parents: Mary Edna (McLester) Greendeer and Fred Greendeer Maternal grandparents: Lee McLester and Blanche McLester He lived with his grandmother form the age of 3 years old until he was 11 years old. He went to school at the Oneida Mission School. His parents went to school in Haskell and weren’t allowed to speak Oneida or they’d be punished for it. In the early 50’s you were only allowed to speak if you were spoken to. Growing up he had electricity but no running water. They had to haul water from a block away, where there was a pump. His mother was involved in a lot of restaurant work. He lived with his mother after he was 12 years old. He then went to school in Wisconsin Dells and a few other places. After he left school he left the Dells. There was no work there for him after Labor Day. He then got involved with the Ho-Chunk Politics. He was also in the Military Air Bourne infantry in 1968. He was in Vietnam for the second time in 1978 for 2 months. Nixon then brought everyone that was there before there for the second time. He remembers there being a big light in the field and there was no electricity or lights there. So, he sneaked up on it for 2 ½ hours and once he reached it, it was about 6 million fire fly’s on a bush.
