Father went to Haskell, but don’t know where Mother went. Both parents spoke the Oneida Language. Grandfather Wheelock went to the Methodist Church. Father worked in Veterans Admissions. Got tired of doing, that, so he enlisted into the service. He was 41 years old and enlisted in to the service. He was a Nurse’s Assistant. Grandfather use to use a Sling Shot to go hunting with. He used a net to go fishing with. Used to make Sour Kraut and Homemade Pickles. Grandparents did a lot of their shopping in Freedom and Seymour. I remember snow banks use to be at least 15 feet high. Quit school at age 14 years old. Enlisted into the Marines in 1950. Did the Basic training in San Diego. Went to Japan and California. Did 13 months in Japan Got transferred to Camp Pantaloons, in the firing range. Went back to Oneida for 4 years, then moved back to Milwaukee. Met his wife, who is Sharlene Hopatowes, they got married and have 5 children. His Children are all enrolled on the Oneida Tribal rolls. At age 52 he started Dancing in the Pow-wow, his wife danced too. Was a Security Guard at the Potawatomi Casino for 4 years. He’s called a Traditional Dancer. When his wife died, they took her blanket and folded it up and put it in a Drum. No one can’t touch that drum or blanket. They took all the jewelry off from her and put it inside the drum also. She was part Winnebago and Menominee Indian. Their tradition is really different from Oneidas.
