Her grandfather was an Indian Herb Doctor and her grandmother worked in Indian schools. There are 4 children in Ida’s family. Her grandfather had one foot cut off in a farming accident. He spoke the Oneida language. In the summer time they’d come from Milwaukee and help their Grandpa King on the farm. Her father lived in Milwaukee his whole life and her mother passed away at a very young age. Her father was a auto mechanic. A customer at that place got Ida’s dad a better job. He ended up working at Inger Saw Man where he made air compressors. Her Uncle Eli would sing the words to a song and Ida would play the piano. Her mother went to school at St. Joseph’s School. She too also spoke the Oneida language. Ida grew up with her father in Milwaukee and Chicago. They had no running water or electricity. She started school in Milwaukee then moved to Chicago Harvey Illinois. She had an English Education Scholar. She went to college and got her master’s degree. Then she moved to New York in1952. She got a job there as a telephone operator. She met her husband Big Chief Russel Moore. They got married in 1956. They would go to New York and Oneida for pow-wows. She went back to teaching school. She taught 1st grade for 2 years then she taught 5th grade. Her and her husband adopted 2 children. The children are now grown up. She moved back to Oneida Wisconsin in 1987 and retired. She bought a new house and then sold it after her son turned 21. They then moved to the elderly housing. She uses the Oneida Health Center a lot and plays bingo but doesn’t use the slot machines at all. She believes the casinos have provided a lot for the communities as for jobs and other things.
