James stayed with his grandmother in Bad River and went to school until high school age. He then moved to Milwaukee with his mother and father. At Bad River on Sundays they’d go to church, do a few chores, and have a big meal, then hang out with friends. James never got into Pow Wows until he moved to Milwaukee. He moved to Milwaukee in 1948-49. He’d use to help his mother with the shopping and hauling coal for heating. High school life was different for James. He ended up quitting when he was just 16 years old. Then, he got a job and began working 32 hours a week. He joined the Navy in 1951-54. He was sent to school for electrician. He got shipped to San Diego after boot camp and worked at L.S II Boat Company. James traveled all over to Hawaii, Japan, Southern China, and Korea. He worked for General Electric for a little while. He then worked where his father had worked for about 40 yrs. He got married 30 years ago, and has one daughter with his wife and a step-daughter. He married a lady name Kathy Cornelius. She passed away in 2000. He has two grandchildren whom are both in college. James returned when he was 62, and is now working again. He won’t get into any politics. He uses the Health Center only for prescriptions because he has Health Insurance through work so, he uses the company’s doctors. James’s oldest daughter wanted to get into the Tribal Law when she was in High School. He doesn’t know what she is doing now just that she works full time and goes to school part-time. His recommendations to the youth today are stay in school and get an education.
