House, LaVerna Helen (Webster)
Born 1/4/1925
Parents: Jane (Doxtator) House and Lafayette Webster
Her parents weren’t allowed to speak Oneida language when they went to school.
They had no running water or electricity. Their cook stove was wood and water.
Her mother use to wash clothes on scrub boards. Every Sunday they’d go to church. For her horse and buddy was their transportation for a while, until her father got a car. Her family always had a big garden filled with strawberries and raspberries. Mother use to make quilts that the family would cover up with. Her mother did a lot of sewing.
When someone was sick they’d go see Dr. Hill. Her mother was a mid-wife; she brought a lot of babies into the world. Sunday was the Lord’s Day and absolutely no work of any kind.
She went to school at Chicago Corners. It was a small school house. It only held grades K-8. Her family only went shopping once a month. They bought everything in bulk no just one of something. Christmas time they always had a tree. They did their own tree trimming. Her and her family used to go Hoyaning. They would be gone all day. Birthdays were also something special to. She remembers that there used to be rational stamps to. There never were any racial problems when she grew up and she lived near the non-Indians.
She married Reynold House in 1946 and they had 8 children. LaVerna had a sister who was sickly and took care of her after school every day. She also took care of her sister’s little girl.
LaVerna now uses the Oneida Health Center and Pharmacy.
Her recommendations for the youth is stay in school and get your education.Recording Type
