Description

Danforth, Leland “Putski” Howard Born 5/27/1948 Parents: Howard Danforth and Mildred (Skenandore) Danforth Maternal Grandparents: Anderson Skenandore and Cynthia (King) Skenandore Paternal Grandparents: Ophelia Danforth and Alfred Danforth His grandparents on both sides were passed away by the time Leland was born. His mother understood the Oneida language but couldn’t speak it. His father could read and write pretty good but he didn’t know where or how far in school he went. His dad worked at Northern Paper Mill for 30 years and his mother worked cleaning houses. His mother went to school by the old morning Glory Diary place. Leland went to Chicago Corners for a while. His parents belonged to the Holy Apostle’s Church. They both sang in the Church Chore. He remembers one time for Easter he got a baby chick and raised it. It turned out to be a roaster, a black one. He says Sunday they had chicken dinner after church and he went looking for his rooster and he couldn’t find it so he asked his mom. She told him where it was and she told him that that’s what they had for their dinner was his rooster. He was only upset for a little while then he got over it. In 1973 he worked for the tribe as a youth counselor. He also worked at the IMAC as hard and soft count. Then he worked as a change runner. That was someone who walked around the casino with a cart and gives the people change so they could play the slots. This saved people from having to get up from their machine and going to the casinos cashiers for their change. He got into tribal politics and was elected into office. He now serves as a council man in the business committee.
