Description

Gilane, Marie Estelle (Webster) Born 08/02/1935 in Odanah, Wisconsin Parents: Cecilia (Bennet) Webster and Francis Webster Her mother and father both went to boarding schools. Her mother was in house keeping all her life and her father worked on the road. Her family had no running water or electricity on the reservation. Her father then moved to Milwaukee. He then found work and housing, when that happen Marie and the rest of her family moved to Milwaukee with her dad. Everyone in her family could speak the Oneida language. Holidays were very special to her. She got a small toy, fruit, and stuff in a stocking. Marie’s family grew up thinking they were only Chippewa not knowing they were Oneida too. She remembers Indians weren’t allowed to buy beer. Someone else had to buy it for them. Marie worked in a smoke shop for 10 years at the Potawatomi Smoke Shop. She was a manager there. She also remembers when she first started. She had to put the cigarette stamp on them. She graduated from High School in 1954 and was in the Marines for 2 years. She was sent to a wavy lunch place. There she was transferred out and went to Hawaii. It wasn’t what she expected it to be. Marie said the first time she flew over the Ocean she was really scared. Her comments to the youth today is stay in school, get your education, and show respect to the elders and you’ll get respect back.
