My parents spoke Oneida, but never taught the kids. I went to school from 3rd grade to 6th in Neillsville. We didn’t have running water or electricity; we didn’t have running water until I was 16 years old. Father farmed and worked Construction. We had cows, chickens and pigs. We had a dog that would chase the cows from the woods, back to the barn. I went to school at the Oneida Mission for 1 year, and then went to Chicago Corners, until 9th grade. Then I went to Seymour High School and graduated from there. I worked at the Casino for the past 10 years, I also worked in the Wardrobe department as a manger I married Reginald Danforth, and we had 4 children.
If my parents went away, the kids always went with, never had a babysitter. We always went to the Brown County Fair; they’d take a picnic lunch with them and eat there on the fair grounds. Use to have to shuck Navy Beans; Mom could make a lot of things. Mother would cook for wedding and funerals. We would go to Seymour to do their grocery shopping.
I never saw my Grandmother not dressed nice. Mother was afraid of storms, whenever a storm would come up, they’d have to go to Grandma’s house. She is remarried now, been marred to her former husband for 19 years now.
Every Sunday they’d go with their father and watch Baseball games. My father build his own Baseball team they were called the Oneida Red Sox.
Recommends the youth, stay close to family, finish school and get an education. Learn a trade, something you can be proud of.Recording Type
