Description

Doxtator, Melinda Jane (Doxtator) Born 12/12/1907 Parents: Chauncey Doxtator & Emma (King) Growing up Melinda lived where today currently stands the Radisson Hotel. Her grandfather George Elm King lived southeast of the airport. Due to losing his job and going blind King had to give up the land. Her other grandfather (Doxtator) had to pay taxes, lost his land, and also was removed from his house. Melinda went to boarding school where Norbert Hill is today. She attended school and work. When in the 4th grade she went to Tomah. When she finished school, she worked for her uncle, babysitting and housekeeping. Her father worked for farmers, and then for a brick company. Her father enjoyed fishing , hunting, and playing baseball in the summer. He’d play baseball with other Oneidas and Farmers . Melinda married Clifford Venafer Doxtator when she was 20 years old. She then lived at her grandma’s house after she got married. She had 11 kids, and moved from her grandma’s house. She moved to the county line (1973-1974). Melinda knew the Oneida language, and starting speaking English when she went to school. She went on to teach the Oneida language in the tribal school. Melinda states it’s great to be Oneida. Her advice to children is to “Hang in there and be Indian.” She’s happy to be born an Indian.
