Description

Doxtator, Prudence "Prudy" Born 10/15/1915 Parents: Fred Bennett Doxtator & Lydia (Doxtator) Prudence went to Catholic School for eight years then Graduated from Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota. While at Flandreau, she would travel to River Falls once a month for a duration of two years. Her participated in many civil duties like translating and recruiting, cherry and apple picking, working at the Government School (now Norbert Hill Center), and singing with the Oneida Hymn Singers where she sang for the community’s wakes. Prudence describes her parents as very welcoming and helpful with other community members. She was friends with the Reeds and Bairds while growing up. She worked multiple jobs throughout adulthood including Morgan’s Grocery Story in Oneida (10 years) as a Clerk, Schroeder’s Store, the Mail Office and the Library. She would later move into Site One. Prudence notes many changes she considers good; in particular the Oneida Community Health Center – “don’t know what we would do without it.” She speaks how everyone should be treated equal but are now. She is proud of her family, likes being Oneida – always saying she is Oneida Indian, and the services that are available for the people.
