Her dads parents were killed when he was just 2-4 years old. Since then he was bounced back and forth between foster homes besides boarding schools. Roberta grew up with no running water or electricity. She had to use kerosene camps for lighting. She attended school in Green Bay and Oneida. Her grandfather was a farmer. He went to school in Haskell and was in a band. Her grandmother didn’t believe in any of that. She never played cards or went to dances. Roberta’s father could speak the Oneida language, but her mother couldn’t. Her mother passes away when she was just 10 years old due to child birth complications. Her father raised her and her family by himself after her mother passed. Roberta went to school in South Dakota at age 17 years old. She learned piano and clarinet. She also made an Indian rug while in school. Her rug was put on display in a museum. She worked in factories was a car hop and even a waitress. She then went to a factory call M.A. Garriet. Co. in Milwaukee. She got in at astro-nauts and stayed there until she retired. She has 6 children. One passed away 5 years ago. She tried to learn the Oneida language but couldn’t. Changes she says she see on the reservation is lots of new houses and casinos. She never cared for gambling. She, herself don’t gamble at all. Her thoughts for the youth is remember who you are, treat the elder the way you’d want to be treated as an elder. And show respect and you’ll get respect back.
