A wall hanging showing the Oradell "lecture Hall" standing proud of a decorative backgroundContext
This decorative wall hanging has the following statement on the back:
The Lecture Hall
1882 – 1922
Was located on the east side of Kinderkamack Road, directly opposite the present Borough Hall. It was privately owned. At the time the building was erected (1882), the area we now know as Oradell, was in the townships of Midland, Palisade, Harington, and Washington. All of the area west of the river, including the site of this building, was in Midland Township.
The building was used as a voting place. Fall elections in the township of Midland were held in the Lecture Hall, or as it was also called, the “Oradell House”. Spring elections were held in the Arcola house, [Arcola] It was in this building on March 7, 1894, the majority of property owners voted to form a new borough, which resulted in the forming of the Borough of Delford on March 8th. The next day, the certificate showing the results of this election was filed with the clerk of the county of Bergen.
In this building on May 22, 1894, an election was held for the purpose of electing a mayor, the council and other borough officers. On June 11, 1894, the first meeting of the new mayor and council was held.
The building was also used for Sunday school and church services by the Congregations of both the Reformed and Episcopal churches before any church buildings were built.
The first movies ever to be shown in Oradell were shown here.
Vail’s traveling show made this a regular stop. After having been used as a garage for a short time, the lot and building was purchased by Mr. Lew Russell and the building demolished.Made/Created
