Context

Astronaut Walter M. Schirra Jr. was raised in Oradell, NJ. He attended Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood and graduated in 1940. Schirra participated in all three of NASA’s early human spaceflight programs, Project Mercury, Project Gemini, and the Apollo program. As one of NASA’s original Mercury Seven astronauts, he became the third American to orbit Earth. Piloting his spacecraft Sigma 7, he completed six orbits around the earth in 1962.
