This is an original color recording of a presentation by Robert C. Stebbins, Emeritus Professor of Zoology and Emeritus Curator in Herpetology, regarding the habitat of Gateway Valley which is in Orinda, Contra Costa County. Dr. Stebbins is known for his field guides, popular books, and over 70 scientific articles. He was the first curator of herpetology at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology and a 1949 Guggenheim fellow. Dr. Stebbins tours Gateway Valley before Orinda's Wilder subdivision was built. This video shows sweeping views of the hills and valleys from Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, the Daly Ranch (owned by Ed Daly), Kaiser Quarry, Brookside Creek and many ponds. Dr. Stebbins discusses future developments plans while identifying plants and animals in the area including California newts, garter snakes and a variety of birds.
