Context

Poul Anderson was one of science fiction and fantasy's most prolific and decorated authors — and a proud Orinda resident for nearly five decades. Born in Pennsylvania to Danish parents, he earned a degree in physics from the University of Minnesota before becoming a full-time writer. After marrying Karen Kruse in 1953, he moved to the Bay Area and settled in Orinda, where he lived until his death in 2001. Anderson won the Hugo Award seven times and the Nebula Award three times, and was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1998 — the field's highest honor. He was also a founding member of the Society for Creative Anachronism. His notable works include The Broken Sword, Tau Zero, and Three Hearts and Three Lions. An asteroid — 7758 Poulanderson — was named in his honor. His legacy lives on locally through the Poul Anderson Creative Writing Contest, established in 2002 by the Friends of the Orinda Library, which annually awards Orinda high school students for outstanding work in science fiction, fantasy, poetry, and short story.
