A PULLMAN ON THE SAN DIEGAN P.S.R.M.A.'s private car ROBERT PEARY was back on the high iron July 5th and 6th for a shakedown run to Los Angeles. David Black took this photo of the green and gold 1926 classic rolling on the Santa Fe surfline about a mile from the Del Mar Depot, col- lecting its first milage in more than eight years. Robert Peary Back in Service The shakedorn trip to Los Angeles on our much l-oved Pullman business car turned out to be well narned, as two brake shoes shook loose somewhere alotrg the way causing the return tr ip to be delayed. Alnost the ent lre restorat ion crew was on board, as were nany regular exhibi t staffers, enjoying the ccast f j -ne sights in air condit ioned comfort snacking on a mountain of pot luck cold cuts and goodies laid out in the dining roon. The restorat lon crew has never had a mechanical problen before having f lawlessiy run our other heavyweighL #1509 over a d-ozen tines last year and three tlnes to las Vegas this year. Their pr id-e was hurt , even though a nissing brake shoe is a minor, easi ly re.paired inconvenience, because the PEARY is the pr ide and joy and unoff ic iaf l l : c'qh'i n nf * h o arrani q-z t. i an The nain reason for their ernbarrassment was that no spare shoes were on board and Arntrak could flnd no replacements that would fit in the short one hour turn around t irne in los Angeles. This caused the car load of revelers to have to r ide back to San D i e , . o o n t h e r e s u l a r A m f l e e t t r a i n w h i l e s h o e s w e r e b e i n g r o u n d e d u p b y P , S . R . The ItrARY was out agarn the next weekend and performed flawlessly while earning bucks for the museum with a pr ivate charter excursion. H, A, Hurry was the museum me- chanic assigned, but fortunately had nothing to do but kick back on the rear platform and. enjoy the r ide as a group of society ladies twit tered over tea and crumpets in the so la r ium. The museum's pr ivate varnish is now ready for longer tr ips on the nat ion's steef highway and an excursion for members is 1n the planning stage.
