After many meetings, phone calls, emails and letters, the decision to attempt to go back out of Mexico, through San Diego, Colton, El Centro and Plaster City to Campo was made. All the railroads cooperated – CZRy, SDIV, BNSF and UP – by moving the locomotive and flatcar for free. The switcher even went up Cajon Pass and back to get to Campo, as the local BNSF switcher goes to Barstow. So, a journey of about 300 miles was required for 49 miles! PSRM Engineer Dave DiGiorgio was the hogger for CZRy on Saturday, February 23 when it arrived Campo. Now, we need to unload the locomotive off the flatcar, which is a job unto itself. BUT, it has finally arrived. This effort took more time than any other single project ever undertaken by me in my entire life! Facilities – Brian Elmore and Co have been working on the electrical service for the library. We had to get a building permit from the County, and several inspections have gone forth since last month. Almost there, we are told. Bill Armfield has begun laying a brick sidewalk in front of the Campo Depot, which will look real nice when it’s finished. Daisy Welch and Don Robertson have been painting the picnic tables there as well. Seth Miller went to Tucson to pick up some new fuel lockers for us. Administrative – Don and Daisy went to Arizona to recruit additional work-campers for us at the work-campers fair there. Museum Services – A new handout for our Golden State train passengers was completed and printed. Each party will now have hand written material covering the history of the railway, Campo, Museum, train equipment and things to see along the way. The handout was started by Jim Baker and Jim Lundquist several years ago and needed refreshing. Equipment – Thanks to Jack O’Lexey, Larry Rose and Red Schmitz for cleaning up the ATSF Library/Buffet car. It was also boarded up to protect the inside for bad things. Another busy month for us at Campo. I hope to see you there soon. Steam Whistling Jim Baker, Steam Foreman We had another great work weekend in February! We got another 40 or 50 tubes removed from Coos Bay #11!! On Friday, the 8th, our crew consisted of Bob Nickles, Dick Pennick, Rich Paulus, Larry Owen and the foreman. On Saturday, the 12th, we again had Bob, Larry, and Rich, and were joined by Mike Lucek. At this rate, we will have the remaining 50 or so all out by March, and will be ready for our boiler inspector to come out to have a look. Fred Carnathan and Tom Walker continue to make progress on turning the wheels for ATSF 1509. The now have five wheel sets (10 wheels) done. By the time you read this they will probably have the last set done. Something new has come up that I want to tell you about. SP2355, the only other survivor ot the T-31 class of SP steam engines, is in a park in Mesa, AZ. It is in pretty bad shape, and the city wants something done about it. A group has been organized to raise the money to clean up the asbestos and lead paint, and to cosmetically restore her so she can remain in the park. If they fail to do so, the city wants to get rid of her. Wouldn’t that be a great addition to our collection? Maybe restoration would not be feasable, but say we cracked an axle on 2353. Where else could we get a replacement? I’ll be keeping an eye on what’s happening in Mesa. Also, I want to thank Larry Rose for bringing this to my attention. Remember, our regular work “weekend” is the second Friday of the month and the next day, making March’s work days the 14th and 15th. For further information or questions, please contact the Steam Foreman at baker@sdrm.org or 619-670-7441. All are welcome to come out and get dirty with us. Hope to see you there! Mesa, AZ Work-camper Job Fair Daisy Welch On the 29th and 30th of January, Daisy Welch and Don Robertson went to the Work-camper Job Fair in Mesa AZ. Our mission was to recruit for the docent position for the museum, and round up any prospects for other future work-camping slots. As a camping resort, PSRM falls a little short, but for anyone who loves trains, it is heaven. We took a big bulletin board with a huge picture of the Tecate train, and that was a real magnet for anyone walking by who loves trains. We also had a slide show of museum pictures running on Don’s laptop. We handed out 150 sheets with a description of the museum, the RV facilities, job descriptions, what is in the area and how far it is to shopping etc. We also handed out just as many of our brochures. We had 4 people give us resumes, and three people left their email addresses, so Jim has some solid prospects to contact. A lot of people stopped to talk to us about trains, will probably come for a train ride and may well contact us later. We both love a good road trip! Board Briefs for February 21, 2008 The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association, Inc. Board of Directors Meeting was held on February 21, 2008. The Board finalized the list of volunteers to be honored at the Annual Dinner March 6. To improve internal controls, all future DGS purchases shall have prior approval before bids are made. It was decided that it would be a conflict of interest for any Board Member, Director or Officer, to accept a paid or unpaid position with a freight operator sharing SD&A tracks. CSRM has offered several pieces of equipment to us, one of which is a wrecker crane with the ability to lift 250 tons. Any decisions or other items will depend upon results of the inspections, and a final look at transportation cost. We are also looking at items and equipment from the Salt Works which would not be best displayed in our venue. There was some discussion about conditions of storage and use of several pieces of equipment owned by East County Dirt Works, Inc. (ECDW). One major concern was the limited space available for storage at our Campo property. The Board suggested that ECDW could be requested to lay additional trackage and switching parallel to the Museum East Lead. The proposal will be taken under legal advisement to be considered in future months. Progress is being made to provide Back-up Plans so our essential operations will carry on if the prime volunteer is unavailable. Additional coverage during the week to coordinate activities and authorize purchases at ECL will be named shortly. This individual would be working with and/or observing outside contractors doing work at Campo. The next BOD Meeting will be held March 20, 2008 at Trinity Church. PSRM Endowment Fund Jim Lundquist The March 2008 TRAINS Magazine had an article titled “Museum life support: endowment” in their Preservation section. The article detailed that attendance is down at most history museums, while competing against the ipods and i–box generation of the children we aim to educate. Fortunately, we operate trains, which is a large, interactive display in its own right. Money left to institutions via will’s through planned giving is one of the principal sources of endowment funding. During the next 30 – 50 years, as the last of the baby boomers become part of the past, $40.6 trillion will be transferred to their heirs – including nonprofits. It’s suggested that this represents a tremendous opportunity for railroad museums to build or create endowments. The article suggests drawing down only 5% per year while trying to grow the fund at closer to 10%+, which keeps up with inflation and future needs. Many museums use their funds to assist with operating costs, and should continue special fund raising efforts to support a new exhibit or expansion. PSRM started an endowment fund with a portion of the $210,000 cash gift in 2006. We have been able to add to that fund from time to time, and have also reinvested the income earned by our money market managers. As of this date, our endowment total is $219,283, subject to the fluxes of our investment portfolio. The majority of our operating expenses are earned from our 5 (continued from previous page) sales of tickets to our demonstration trains. From that, the Ticket to Tecate trains are our major financial generator. Given that this train is dependant upon the continued cooperation of two countries and four organizations, it is good practice to seek additional revenue sources to diversify our income stream. We are looking at additional potential train destination and events, and, are also looking to grow our endowment. Have you considered our museum in your will and planned giving? This could be an excellent way to support our cause with the knowledge that your gift will go on forever helping to save San Diego history. If you would like to discuss a particular need or potential naming rights for a building or project, please contact me at 619-417-7059. I would love to sit down and discuss our long term museum needs with you anytime. In the meantime, please consider our Museum’s endowment fund in your giving plans.
