Page Three M A R C H - 1 9 662 PACIFIC BEACH & WESTERN I The P.B, Model RR Club is somi going to have that outdoor 1^® scale rail road at Del Mar. It has been a long wait and there have been many set backs along the way but now the word is back from Sacramento and there is a definite Lease on Land at the fair grounds. Work will probably not ac tually start until the fall of this year after the fair and race season. The club has 1,000 feet of prefabric ated 7-|- inch gauge track built and in storage , this will be a starter when track work begins* There will also be some dual gauge track to handle trains of the one inch scale• The smell of coal smoke and hot Lubricating oil is going to once more be a realityH The miniature outdoor railroad will not just cater to Live steam locomotives, there will also be some gasoline pow ered diesels and gas-electric coaches. All of the equipment is large enough to ride on and many happy hours will be in store for everyone in years to come as the Little trains click and clack across the rail joints several Sundays each month. MOVE THE DEL MAR EQUIPMENT? There is a plan being worked up by our 2nd VP, Tommy Mann to move the full sized railroad equipment from the pre-- sent location at the fair grounds. The Locomotive and Coach are in a poor loc ation for pictures and being complete ly separated from the streetcar makes it difficult to have members man them during the fair. If moved9 the whole works would be placed on a Long sec tion of straight track just south and to the west of Harvest Hall. There is space there for more equipment and it could all be kept together. This spot also offers photographers both, sides of the equipment. This would also be more helpful in regards to possibly moving in a Santa Fe caboose and the chance of a small steam Locomotive. An alternate spot would be west of the Harvest Hall on a slightly curved sec tion of track. NEWS Fulfilling a request from the National .Central Library in London,England, our city’s library has sent on loan two books by local author, Philip S. Rush, editor of '’Southern Calif- Rancher.” Tte books are: ”Hlstox*y of the Calif- ornias”, and "The Califomiss, 18^6-1957. (Mr. Rush is vne of our society members.) Freddy Finke is a chipping clerk at Marston’s. But he was a private rail road car, and thattf by Freddy, is San Diego. He has some partners, like TV-8 man Jack Stodelle and banker Tom Sefton. But that fine old Soo Line president’s car, sitting near Broadway on a Santa Fe siding, is just as much Freddy Finke’r as Sefton’s or Stodelle’s, and a good more his by now than the president of the Soo Line. (Fred is our society treasurer.) Both articles have appeared in recent Neil Morgan columns in the Tribune. • " .......
