On our leisurely return trip, we will visit some of the main points of interest, as well as going off the beaten path. At various stops along the way, we will see the colorful trainside vendors selling regional specialties. During daylight hours our train will ascend jhe spectacular Barrancas Grade between Tepic and Guadalajara while traveling south. Arrival in Mexico City is scheduled for the morning of December 24, allowing time for last minute personal Christmas shopping, if necessary, or sightseeing. In the evening there will be a special Posada and Pinata party in the hotel. The Posada is a traditional and colorful pageant recreating the search by Mary and Joseph for rooms in Bethlehem on the Eve of the Birth of the Lord. After the Nativity Scene has been arranged there is a happy and joyous party with folk dancing and singing, during which a pinata stuffed with "goodies” is broken, in a game similar to our Blind Man’s Buff. Christmas Day will be spent in the traditional manner amongst our own group in the hotel, with a special dinner in the late afternoon. Two full days after Christmas will be at leisure, allowing individual or small group sightseeing to our own personal choice. Reservations will be made before arrival in Mexico City. This arrangement allows everyone to choose their own pleasure. Thusly, people visiting here for the first time can see the most famous places, while those who are on their second or third visit can go places they have missed on other tours. Rail fans will have time to ride the famous narrow gauge steam trains or trolley cars. Leaving Mexico City by bus, we travel through the beautiful Lake District of Central Mexico, visiting Toluca, Morelia, Lakes Patzcuaro and Chapala, stopping overnight in Patzcuaro, home of the famous butterfly net fishermen and some of the most beautiful hand-woven fabrics of Mexico. New Years Eve will be celebrated in Guadalajara, second largest city in Mexico, and agricultural center of the nation. Here again, we have three days for leisurely sightseeing of our personal choice in this area of an eternal springtime climate. In the early evening of Wednesday, January 1, 1964, we board our special Pullman cars and move on to Tepic, where buses will meet us for the side trip to the beautiful and famous, but remote, jungle swamps of San Blas, Nayarit. Here the Indian guides take us for a ride in their dugout canoes through this area that is a paradise for the bird watcher, and of great interest to flower lovers, without interference from insects. Time will be allowed to walk around the town that has changed very little since the days of Spanish rule. Virtually unknown to tourists, this port was the destination of the fabulously rich Manila Galleon, stopping-off place for Fra Junipero Serra on his way north to establish the California Missions, and source of most of the mission bells. Friday, January 3, will be spent visiting Mazatlan, the Pearl of the Pacific. The morning will be spent sightseeing in a special and unique tropical bus. The afternoon will be at leisure for shopping, swimming on the beautiful beaches, or just plain strolling and exploring. ROAMING TOURS presents THE DESERT EXPRESS for adventurous people Saturday, November 23, 1963, through Sunday, November 24, 1963 A special train between Mexicali, Baja California, and Puerto Penasco, Sonora, on the northeast coast of the Gulf of California. Enroute, the train will pass through one of the most seldom seen and ruggedly beautiful deserts in the world. There are no highways through these dunes, and all regular train service is operated at night. Therefore, this spectacular desert may only be viewed from the comfort and safety of a special train. Stops will be made for photographers, and rock hounds might find pieces of petrified wood near the track. The northern part of the Gulf of California is one of the few places in the world that regularly has a difference of 20 to 30 feet between high and low tides. It comes in fast over the shallow beaches. Puerto Penasco is a small port, noted for sport fishing. Railfans will have plenty of excitement when two passenger trains and two freight trains meet here between midnight and 1:00 A.M. Photographers should have plenty of flash bulbs on hand to take advantage of the picturesque vendors cooking and selling food at this time. Our special train will be parked for overnight occu pancy near the station. This is a unique and unusual opportunity to ride on a very friendly railroad, and to get off the beaten path away from the well known tourist centers. The people of Puerto Penasco are accus tomed to tourists, but they have the politeness and charm of Old Mexico that is so famous. The route of this 560 mile trip passes through three climate and four horticultural zones, varying from the semi-arid coast and wooded mountains to barren sand dunes. Daytimes in the desert and at Puerto Penasco are pleasantly warm at this time of year, but the nights are cool. The marvel ously dry air is clear as a bell in this quiet country. Once the irrigated farm lands of the Mexicali Valley are left behind, there are no signs of human habitation until Puerto Penasco, with the exception of railway employee homes at small isolated stations along the line. The hobby show will be open to the public free on Sunday, October 13th, from 1-4 P.M. It will be located at the University Heights Building in North Park at 4044 Idaho Street. This is one of the several events the Railway Historical Society of San Diego (Non Profit Corporation) has for the general public during the year. Society meetings are held at the Santa Fe Railway Depot on the first Monday evening of the month at 7:30 P.M. The society operates a steam train and streetcar exhibit during the San Diego County Fair at Del Mar. It runs about two train excursions a year to interesting points in Southern California. The society restores and maintains its five railway exhibits in San Diego County and at the Trolley Museum in Perris, California. This is done to keep alive the memory of steam and streetcar travel of the past. Should you desire to know the whereabouts of car 54 — it is located at the Whaley House in Old Town. It is an old time San Diego streetcar built before the turn of the century and retired before the first World War. #####
