Wing and Son Upright Concert Grand

Name/Title

Wing and Son Upright Concert Grand

Description

A dark stained wooden upright piano with 5 pedals. Established in 1868 as Doan, Wing, & Cushing, manufacturing square grands and uprights. Luman Wing split from Doan, Wing, & Cushing establishing Wing & Son Piano Company in 1873. These pianos were unique in that they had five pedals rather than the standard 2 or 3 pedals. The pedals mimicked tones of string instruments: Mandolin, Orchestra, Expression, Soft, and Forte. By the 1930s, Wing & Son went out of business due to the Great Depression. In 1919, Ben and Mina Ehlers bought the hotel from Mr. Hess for $10,000. This 1911 Wing & Son Wing and Son Upright Concert Grand was in Hotel Palacios. After Ehlers sold the hotel in 1924 to a group of Illinois men—Dr. W. W. Van Wormer, E. J. Seward, and F. O. Jennings, he took the piano and other pieces of furniture from the hotel. Ehlers’ granddaughter, Carla Ehlers Edge, taught students on this piano for many years.
