Description

Shrimp Trawlers Emma and Helen B. The first Alabama shrimp boat, the "Helen B.", came to Palacios in about 1918 and was brought here by Fred Bates. At that time shrimping on a commercial basis was not practiced in Texas to any great extent. The emphasis in the Palacios fisheries of the early 1920s was on fish and oysters, which could be iced and shipped by railway express. Shrimp, on the other hand, was too perishable to lend itself to an ice-only method of shipment.
