Red Laquer Trinket BoxDescription
Fan-shaped box of red lacquerware with lid. Lid and sides of box are decorated with low-relief carving. A landscape of mountains and rocks with two male figures under a tree in foreground decorate the lid. A geometric pattern, characteristic of this type of lacquer ware, covers sides of box as well as background areas on face, a different pattern ofr sky and earth, very typical. Lacquerware is made of many layers of resin, clear or pigmented, on a wooden base or other, which forms a very hard, durable surface which can then be carved or left smooth. This type is commonly called vermillion, which describes the color, and is opaque and carved. The edges of the carvings are very sharp and sometimes deep and delicate, indicating the hardness of the material. The lid fits over a raised lip on edge of box. The bottom and inside of box is painted black. "China" is painted on bottom in red. "L 1018" is scrawled in red crayon or wax pencil. Lip is painted red, matching color of lacquer. Several numbers, "275, 4c-1, 295" are written in red crayon inside lid.Dimensions
