Tibetan PendantDescription
An elaborate Tibetan silver ornament of many pieces, cast and hand-wrought, linked together in several interconnecting chains with fine silver toiletry implements pendant from round stone set in filigreed lotus. A sharp hook with applied bezel setting, missing a stone, is at top with five fancy links (pictured below) in chain to a cast triangular piece with a demon in relief surrounded by 3 mm turquoise stones, bezel set. Four link chains and a reddish thread with three stones red, green, depend from five loops along bottom edge of cast triangular piece. The two outer chains hang freely with 2 cm. long cast pieces at ends. The three inner strands attach to the top three points of a filigreed lotus bottom with bezel set round stone 2.5 cm in diameter. Half the stone is a plain beige color, the other is brown and cream in wavy lanes and swirls with gold metallic flecks. Hanging from each of five points at the bottom of lotus are five more chains of links with a metal tool at the end of each. An attached note explains they are toiletry devices, various picks, spoons and a set of tweezers used by a Tibetan sect to whom washing is restricted to an annual occasion. "Hence the natives wear these "toilet articles" down the front of their dress - to remove excess dirt. There are two picks, one rather thick and strong, the other made of metal hammered flat and with a sharper blade with a section that has been incised with parallel lines as on a nail file. There are two spoons, one tiny (4mm) with a flattened bowl, the other with a scoop 1 cm across. There is also an implement that resembles our fingernail clippers that bay be a tweezers. Each implement has been hammered and has a soldered so that small loops radiate around the disks, These links are double linked to each other with two plain links at each end.
