Provenance

Notes

This is one of a set of three wine glasses that belonged to Lucy Gray Henry Harrison (1857–1944), a great-granddaughter of Patrick Henry. The glasses were saved from the Red Hill mansion fire of February 1919. Later, Mrs. Harrison gave them to George Ed Britton (1907–1977), an African American sharecropper who lived on the property. Britton was the first to discover the fire and alert the fire brigade. Mrs. Harrison gave Britton these glasses as a thank-you for his efforts to save the house. Britton gave (or sold) the wine glasses to Michael Daniels (1952–2015), who loaned them to the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation in 1996. They were formally accessioned into the collection on December 8, 2022.
