Notes

This black-and-white photograph depicts Patrick Henry Fontaine (1869–1959), a great-grandson of Patrick Henry. Fontaine is descended from Patrick and Sarah Shelton Henry's oldest daughter, Martha Henry Fontaine (1755–1818), whose son is Col. Patrick Henry Fontaine (1775–1852), whose son is Edward Fontaine (1814–1884), whose son is the donor, Patrick Henry Fontaine. Patrick Fontaine included a letter in which he enclosed this photo, which reads, in part: "Please find enclosed picture and negative taken in my garden as I stood in front of my young berry trellis." Fontaine donated the photo along with a letter from Patrick Henry to his daughter, Martha Henry Fontaine, which is in the PHMF collection (77.18). Fontaine's photo was not accessioned. In February 2023, it was decided to accession his photo and the adjoining negative for its historical importance.
