Chloe Irene Stephenson was born on September 12, 1897, in Cary, North Carolina. She married James Spotswood Fontaine (1888-1943), a third-great-grandson of Patrick Henry, on September 2, 1930, and they had one daughter, Catherine Spotswood Fontaine (1938-2015). She died on June 1, 1982, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
