Photographic portrait of Annie Fontaine Redd Quarles as a young woman. Adhered to a matte inside of a cardboard folder. Inscription written on the inside flap reads: Annie Fontaine Smith Quarles Taken in my Colonial costume which I wore to the "Birth Night Ball" at "Gadsby's Tavern," Alexandria, Va. on Feb. 22, 1932 in celebration of the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth.

Annie Fontaine Smith, a third-great-granddaughter of Patrick Henry, was born on November 28, 1885, in Reidsville (Rockingham County), North Carolina. She married John Philips Quarles Sr. (1888-1936) on October 20, 1909. They had three children: Beverly Quarles, John Philips Quarles, Jr., and Dorothy Spotswood Quarles. She died in Richmond on July 10, 1945, and is buried at Chester, Virginia. This photograph of her as an baby was given to PHMF on May 3, 2023, by Monique and Philip Heller, who inherited this object and the others in this accession from her stepmother, Catherine Spotswood Fontaine Lawrence (1938-2015), a third-great-granddaughter of Patrick Henry. Annie Fontaine Smith was her cousin.
