2023.44.2Description
Black-and-white photograph, square. Image of Harrison's Cabin under construction at Red Hill. A square, log building with a partially completed roof stands in the center, behind an open brick foundation of the smokehouse. A scaffold can be seen standing against the cabin. The building is surrounded by piles of dirt and rubble.
Two large trees flank the cabin and a line of hedges sits behind them. Behind the tree on the left are several large unknown objects, possibly tarps covering supplies. A clear sky shows between the trees and a large, empty field of grass takes up half of the picture plane.Provenance
Notes
This photograph is one of a set of images depicting the Red Hill property during its principal restoration by the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation in 1961.
This particular photograph was taken of Harrison's Cabin and the icehouse during construction in June 1961. The cabin was restored using approximately 25% of its logs from the original cabin built in the 19th century. The other 75% seems to have been taken from a barn.
This photograph was found in the James S. Easley Papers. Mr. Easley helped to establish the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation and served as its first president from 1944 to his death in 1965.
